To try to contain the spread of the coronavirus force, we are having to stay home with only very occasional trips out for food, medicine and some fresh air.  By now we should all be aware to keep distance from one another and for those who are a family with kids this is going to get fractious. It is not all about tech, you will need to consider the human element. 

Let us all start and spend a moment imagining the glorious end of this self-imposed social exile.  As we are forced to collectively and radically change our daily lives, thanks to external events, it is the ending that will bring a heavy dose of joy, a joint experience that we will continue to talk about years later and a sense of having been “in it together”.  So, hold onto this feeling, it is there in the future and hopefully coming soon.

It is crucially important to work out your daily schedule with your working hours, exercise and relaxing.  Your normal daily routine will most definitely not be the same and if you should slip on sticking to a schedule you will grow more sluggish over time and your mood will slip.

Put effort in preparing breakfast, lunch and dinner, use fresh fruit and veggies and try avoiding “grazing” all day.  Buy what you need avoid panic shopping.

Try to increase family sleep, literally everything is going to be easier with more sleep, try reading a book at the end of the day until you feel you are ready to have “good sleep”.

Start your day like a normal working day, do your morning exercise, have a shower, get dressed and enjoy a healthy breakfast.  Try to set up your workstation where you would be able to work without the children interrupting you, this is going to save your sanity.  Go outside even if it is only for 5 minutes to give you a mental break. Another great idea if you are more than one locked down at home, is to have a pair of headphones, listen to your favourite music that will sooth your soul and obviously block out the sounds of your children watching their TV show.

To deal with your children at home is going to be the big deal, especially if you need to work. A schedule for your children is just as important as they will not be going to school.  They should also start their day like a normal school day, add flexibility into the schedule by offering several slots of time when they can choose an activity. Unfortunately, you will experience a day when the schedule will fall apart, try getting your children to draw up a list of fun things to do and incorporate into the schedule.

When you reach a point of exploding, try getting your children involved in some iPad or computer programs like:

At First Touch we are always strong believers in keeping fit, especially whilst in lock-down.  There are such a lot of activities and exercise that can be done indoors, from Dad looking after his abs, Mom keeping in shape and children keeping fit.

Music can work wonders, music with an upbeat sound can put everyone in a good mood, dance even include some head-banging as it can be a good release of energy and at the same time everyone gets exercise whilst having loads of fun.

There are countless exercises available on the internet, but parents need to ensure that children are not participating in exercises that are not fit for them.  These are amazing for Dad, Mom and children:

Keeping in touch with friends and families is a great way to escape the claustrophobia of your own home, set up video conference with your family or friends and encourage your children to do the same, at least this way you will feel that you are still having contact with the outside world.
